Design, photo editing.

You created a line with the Pen tool, but now you don't know how to add an anchor point in Illustrator! This isn't always the most intuitive way to add a new anchor point to a line, but here's how.

Starting with Adobe Illustrator 2022, adding an anchor point to a line is pretty easy. Draw a shape with the Pen tool, then simply click anywhere on the path. You will see a small plus sign to indicate that the tool is configured to add points. Very easy!

If you want to subtract points, it can be a bit tricky. You can easily press the "-" and "+" keys on your keyboard with the Pen tool selected to switch between subtraction and addition. Although the Pen tool adds points by default, switching modes with these shortcuts actually changes the tool. Subtracting to Add Back will change pen tools. You can score points, of course. But Illustrator actually switches to the Add Anchor Point or Remove Anchor Point tool, instead of remaining in the Pen tool.

This Add Anchor Point or Delete Anchor Point tool appears.

Si desea que estas herramientas estén siempre visibles, puede hacer clic en Ventana > Barras de herramientas > Avanzado. La herramienta Agregar punto de anclaje se agregará a la barra de herramientas junto a la herramienta Pluma.

Overall, the Pen tool is advanced enough that you don't need the Add or Delete tools most of the time. Using the default Pen tool, you can click anywhere in a selected shape to add an anchor point. You can also delete an anchor point by clicking it.

The advanced toolbar displays additional pen tools.

You can temporarily override this all-in-one feature by holding down the Shift key while creating a new shape. This allows you to create an anchor point for a new shape without accidentally adding one to an existing shape. Just be sure to release the Shift key before making your second point, to prevent the Pen tool from being limited to lines on the axis only.
